BANNED & RECOVERED: ARTISTS RESPOND TO CENSORSHIP

Friday September 5, 2008 - Wednesday December 31, 2008 12:00 PM - 5:30 PM In a first-time collaboration, the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO) and the San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB) are presenting an exhibit, curated by Hanna Regev, which features work from more than 50 artists working in a variety of media. Participating artists interpret a censored text of their choice. The project provides a unique forum for visual artists to respond to the suppression of literary art. THE ELECTRIC VANDALS PRESENT THE THIRD ANNUAL OAKLAND ARTS CLASH

The Electric Vandals, in cooperation with the City of Oaklands' Parks and Recreation division and with promotional support from Oaklandish, are presenting their annual mixed arts festival at the Malonga Casqulourd Center for the Arts October 11th 2008. Tickets will be $15, opening reception begins at 7pm. Some of the highlights of this years clash will include; Axis Dance Company, the award winning mixed abilities dance company, currently celebrating their 20th anniversary. Hyim, the award winning singer songwriter and Oakland native can be heard on local radio as well as at this years "Arts and Soul Festival" in downtown Oakland. The rap/DJ duo Shawnee and Poetic will feature live break dancing. A modern dance performance by Oakland based Dance Elixir founder Leyya Tawil. A modern jazz performance with Antoine Hunters' (of Savage Jazz fame) newly formed Urban Jazz dance Company. Oakland horn driven rock and soul outfit Damon and the Heathens. T.
