OAKLAND POETRY SLAM
This year the Bay is sending four teams to Nationals: Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco and Sacramento. You owe it to yourself to come witness the poetic carnage they inflict on each other first- hand. The Oakland Battle of the Bay on Thursday, July 31 (tonight) from 8:00 to 10:30pm at the Oasis (135 12th St. @ Madison) is the last in the series this year. $10 admission - this is a fundraiser to cover team travel expenses. This event is 21+.

LAKEFEST '08
Lakeshore Avenue will turn into a pedestrian zone to host an art and wine festival featuring live music, arts and crafts booths, local vendors, a Green Living Expo, a carnival for kids, wine tasting, food booths and more. August 2 and 3 (Saturday and Sunday), from 11am-6pm on Lakeshore between Lake Park and Mandana. Admission is FREE!

PORT HURON PROJECT
Oakland Museum and Creative Time present: Friday, August 1: Chicago 10 documentary @ 6:30, panel discussion with Mark Tribe, Emory Douglas, Nato Thompson, Rene de Guzman @ 7:30. Saturday, August 2: Youth radio DJs @ 5pm, Angela Davis speech reenactment @ 6pm at deFremery Park, 1651 Adeline Street. Davis' speech argued for joining anti-Vietnam War protest with social justice concerns illustrated by government suppression of the Black Panther Party and the trial of the Chicago 10. Both events free and open to the public.

10,000 STEPS
This interactive community-based project, designed to increase awareness of historic parks in downtown Oakland, invites you to share your story at one of their upcoming greening events. On Friday, August 1, First Friday, 10,000 Steps will act as stewards of Frank Ogawa Plaza in the vicinity of the Oakland Art Gallery (Kahn's Alley near City Hall) from 5-8pm. Equipped with a multifunctional workcart made from re-used materials, 10,000 Steps will invite passers-by to engage in park maintenance as well as story-telling: tell them why urban green space is important to you. August 7th, from 5-9pm. Washington between 8th & 9th, 9th between Broadway and Washington (Old Oakland). 1st and 3rd Thursdays through October. Featuring live music and DJs, beverages, artisans, and art. Featured bands for August are Dynamic Band (hop hop/R&B) on the 7th and Crown City (hip hop/funk/soul) on the 21st.

An exhibition exploring the creative talent exploding in Oakland today. Saturday August 9th from 1-6pm along MacArthur Blvd. between 35th and 38th Avenues. Laurel Streetfest is a free family event in Oakland's Laurel District. Live music, food, shopping, and a Kidsworld with petting farm, pony rides, bumper cars and rock climbing.
