MIX IT UP EAST BAY
Mix It Up East Bay is a monthly happy hour series started in July 2007 that brings young leaders, activists and community organizers in the East Bay together in a relaxed, social environment. There is so much going on in the East Bay yet the next generation of leaders are not being recognized, exist in their issue silos, and don't know each other. Each month, a different issue is addressed and three to four organizations who support the overall theme are highlighted through very brief presentations. The next meeting, themed "Public Art: Essential for a Vibrant City" is tonight, June 12 from 6-9 at Arsimona's in downtown Oakland. The program will probably start around 7:15. Invited organizations include the City of Oakland (Art & Soul Festival, Movies in Old Oakland), Art Murmur, and Oaklandish. All are welcome!

INNOVATORS AWARD
Oakland has historically been a hotbed of renegade activity, where boundaries are redefined and trends are created rather than followed. To help encourage the continuation of this "trailblazers' legacy," Oaklandish has created the Oaklandish Innovators Award, a fund that offers annual grants to those organizations and individuals who are doing pioneering work in our community. Every year five honorees are selected, each receiving a $5,000 grant. The total award fund equals $25,000 annually, which we hope will grow with your support!

Our fourth Oaklandish Innovators Award and $5,000 grant goes to: People's Grocery
People's Grocery is a community-based organization that strongly believes that everyone deserves healthy food, regardless of income. People's Grocery develops creative solutions to the health, environmental and economic challenges our community faces every day. The mission is to create a self-reliant sustainable food system in West Oakland. In order to fulfill their mission, People's Grocery is building an independent food system and a local economy grounded in community partnership and local knowledgebase. These principles are accomplished through various activities, such as: education on sustainable agriculture, health, nutrition, food justice and business, in addition to developing food-related enterprises and small businesses, creating a method of low-cost food distribution, supporting local farms, and advocating for policy changes at a government level.
