SLAM!

Wow! We're on a roll now. Another DOPE show! If you were in Alaska or
a coma or something and missed mighty Mike McGee's feature at April's
edition of the Oakland(ish) Slam Series then you ought to be ashamed
of your self. Maybe you just don't like poetry, or laughing until it
hurts or just generally being entertained by witty wordsmiths… or
maybe we somehow missed getting the word out to you. Well consider
this fair warning – the next show is May 12th and best believe we
have a treat in store for you.

Our feature for the evening will be none other than the wonderfully
talented and widely renowned Aya de Leon (www.ayadeleon.com). Aya,
fresh off a wildly successful run of her one woman show "Thieves in
the Temple: The Reclaiming of Hip Hop" was on the 2000 San Francisco
Slam team, was a Poet in Residence at Stanford last year (yeah THAT
Stanford), appeared on HBOs Def Poetry and has toured and published
extensively. Aya has also received a Goldie award in the Spoken Word
artist category from the SF Bay Guardian and was named the best
theater discovery by the SF Chronicle. She's shared the stage with
Eve Ensler, the Roots, and she was a co-author of the book "How to
Get Stupid White Men Out of Office."

At the last show, we had some stupendous poets in the Slam (and in
the open mic too). The slam was filled with both well-known local
poets from years past, folks from other parts of the country who
haven't slammed in The Bay before and even a fresh-faced newbie to
the mic. We had a pretty even male/female split but in the end it was
the men with the win again. Tshaka took top honors (and the $) for
the evening by besting Jamie Kennedy in the final round "joke-off"
(yeah "joke" off – get your mind out the gutter!). These two will
join Jason Bayani, Messej 1, Lucky 7 and Dahled in the finals in June.

Our feature, Mike McGee, showed us why he's blowing up like nobody's
business. He didn't need the mic to rock "Microphone" and had us
eating "Pudding" out of the palm of his hand. He made us laugh with
him and at ourselves and put in one of the best performances I've
seen from him. Mike is like fine wine or cheese – he just gets better
and better with age.

So, now that you know what you're doing on May 12th you should get
together a couple of friends and bring them with you. They'll thank
you for it – I guarantee. Also, if you haven't been to Oaklandish yet
(especially if you live in Oakland) and have seen the stickers and
tee-shirts or werejust wondering what all the hubbub is about this is
the perfect opportunity to check it out.
